CHAPTER 12

WE ARE PREDATORS NOT PREY

Dozer kept his sniffer to the ground as we moved forward with an extreme prejudice of caution. Ruri walked a few feet behind me alongside Melody. None of us were stealth based so we did our best to keep the noise down as we moved. On my map in my interface, Mase and Danny were a ways ahead of us and had been moving fast but now their blue dots were stationary. My first guess would be they found our quarry.

I motioned the ladies to follow and sent a pulse to Doze who picked up the pace a bit while still keeping his nose shuffling along the ground. Mase and Danny were about a half mile out at a guess. We got moving, still far below a normal pace but I didn’t want to roll into anything blind. Wolves were adept hunters especially in a forest environ. I would guess every wolf had stealth naturally and these Dire Wolves probably even more so if they wanted to kill anything with their size.

As we moved closer and closer to Mase and Danny their blips started retreating back to us, though at a pace that told me they weren’t running from anything. I decided to hold us up here and let them come to us. We were all on high alert, weapons to hands.

Less then ten minutes later Mason came out of the darkness in the thick of trees and my eyes scanned for Danny. My eyes turned at a sound to my left as Dozer jumped on a now revealed Danny smiling on the ground as my boy snout kissed her. My Brother grinned. “Got a ways to go but her stealth is getting there and she’s learning fast.”

I gave him a look that said business little Brother. A shot of guilt permeated his eyes then he took on his bloody gaze. “The Alpha is posted on the crest of a small hill in a clearing about half a mile further on. He’s a Level 16 Elite Dom and he has 3 Level 14 Elite Alpha’s spread out at the base of the hill. They periodically have some Level 12’s coming and going looking to be relaying messages to those at the City fighting.” He paused for a moment. “Something’s off about this Dom, a bit too calculated for wolves. I am no fucking expert on animals but a wolf sitting on a hill directing other wolves doesn’t seem very, uhm, wolf like.” I thought about it and agreed. It didn’t seem like something animals would do though I had no fucking clue what War World actually did to these wolves when it brought them over besides pumping steroids into them. I know Doze was probably smarter then he was on Earth but he wasn’t that much smarter. I heard an annoyed snort behind me. I ignored it. I did have to ponder what he said though, he was right, something felt off. Just on a
